There are many reasons why I chose this major but the main on is to become a Spanish teacher. I want to teach people correct academic Spanish. Another reason why I decided to major in this language is to expand my linguistic vocabulary and be able to accurately transmit my ideas orally or on paper. One day I watched a Spanish documentary and the narrator sounded really smart by using a solid, strong and intellectual academic language. Sometimes it's not necessary to talk rocket science to sound intelligent, it's just a matter of using "fancy" words and applying proper syntax. He inspired me to develop my language skills. Language is one of the most powerful tools mankind has ever discovered that can be used for many different purposes. One of my favorite ones is persuasion, I like the fact that by using language you can alter many people's perspectives. Most of the powerful leaders in history that produced a clout on mankind had a highly skilled dominance of language.
I have learned a lot in this major, especially about Spanish history, culture, politics, literature, poetry, and writing. Given that my emphasis is literature and culture, I have learned many new literature and cultural elements about Spain, Mexico and Latin America in general. Literature, time, geography and culture come together, is recommended to learn about these concepts in order to understand the author's literature piece. This way the reader will know what political philosophies, wars, and movements inspired the author. La ilustración (the enlightenment) for example, this intellectual movement is characterized by its utilitarian rationalism, rejection of religion and new interest for science. In order to fully understand and analyse all the writings of these authors that lived during the eighteenth century we have to know what "the enlightenment" is.
The writing field is where I feel I really developed and grew. All classes in this major consist on frequent writing. Three to twelve page essays were periodically required in order to achieve a good grade. By practicing writing on a daily basis I rapidly developed my writing skills and research abilities. I learned how to research scholarly articles and use proper citations. The research requiring essays helped me put my thoughts on paper without using plagiarism.
My writing and speaking skills is what I’m most proud of. I learned a lot of new vocabulary words to make my speech sound academic as well as my writing. Before this program I felt that my writing skills were at high school level even though I transferred from a two year community college. Practice makes perfect, although I don’t consider myself at that level yet practicing writing periodically is helping get me there.
