Reflective Narrative
Span 321 Masterpieces of Hispanic Literature
This course meets MLO 1: language proficiency and MLO 4: Literary and Cultural Knowledge. 1.1 Speaking ability: in this class we were required to analyze the book’s material and participate in active class discussions about the texts we previously read. (1.2) We had to be able to listen to the teacher’s lecture and take notes as well as to answer questions in class. (1.3) This is the part of the MLO most practiced in this course; we read a book called “1000 años de literature española” through out the semester. It was required to read and deeply analyze around two to three chapters a month. Tests were provided by the instructor to see our understanding of the readings. (1.4) On the tests, we had to write some analytical essays about each chapter of the book. Some times we were required to write short essays in class about the assigned reading and participate in class discussion. MLO 4 was met in this class because of the literature, it was a class of a one thousand year period of Spain’s literature. Through literature, we learned many aspects of Spanish culture and history. As we read through the different literature movements, the instructor would provide us with some background information about Spain’s political status at the time so we could understand the readings better. We read all the chapters of the book which described movements like: middle ages and the era of Catholic kings, modernity and golden age, eighteen century: the enlightenment, 98’s generation and modernism and Spain during the twentieth century. Our knowledge was tested on a monthly basis about these literature movements; reading and writing was highly required to meet the mentioned MLOs. We wrote a “diario” or journal through out the semester describing what we did and learned on each class meeting. I did a couple of class presentations on a certain poem or story from the book. The knowledge I gained from this course is broad, the main thing is the different movements of literature in Spain and what inspired them. I would like to develop further my reading skills/abilities; I noted that in this course I struggled to keep up with the reading. I want to expand my Spanish vocabulary and be able to understand texts like these with out the help of a dictionary.
